Aluminum Bathtub Tsunami Tank (Too Many Pics 50+)

I just finished this at work. Took about 5 months because I am a shop of one and there were still other people needing work done on shorter timelines.

This is a tsunami simulation tank for a civil engr PhD case that will be spun in a giant centrifuge at UC Davis. The spinning will crate a force of 40 times the normal force of gravity on the "water" (a gelatinous mix of water and cellulose to model water's fluidity at higher gravity). By increasing gravity, the simulated wive will be 1/40th the size of the actual wave and happen in 1/40th the time, in this case about 8/10ths of a second.

The water is held in a reservoir and released by a pneumatic actuated gate. It flows across a box of water saturated soil/sand simulating how the wave would effect low lands near the shore. After the wave event, a rear gate opens and the water is allowed to flow back through the reservoir and into a chamber underneath.

The tank needs to seal an equivalent water head of about 40-50 feet of pressure, I think this was about 30psi over a large area. Overall dimensions are roughly 7 feet long by 40" wide and 30" deep. It is built form mostly 1 1/4" 6060 al plate. There are something like 800 screws total, mostly 3/8 and 1/2 socket head cap screws into blind tapped holes. Finished weight is just under 2500 lbs.

The centrifuge is an impressive unit. It has a 9 meter (30 ft) arm that can spin creating 80G's on the carriage. It is set in a concrete bunker below ground to contain anything that could fly off. It was originally built for NASA to test space equipment int he 60s.

Here are some pictures of the build. Please excuse any duplicates, I just dumped them into my hosting site randomly.

Cool stuff. I betcha that wasn't cheap.
My wife asked me why a carry a gun in the house. I said "decepticons", she laughed, I laughed and the toaster laughed.
I shot the toaster.

It makes a mini ocean wave. Just another wacky idea turned into a physical item. It's every day of the week for me working at the university

Mostly is boils down to an incredibly expensive bathtub that's going to be spun until it nearly self-destructs. It's how to turn a half million research grant into something to take pictures of. I won't go into the politics or where the money comes from, mostly because that's not my department. I just make chips in the shop.

Universities tend to have very nice shops, and insanely clean boiler buildings.
