Dishwasher repair
« on: April 08, 2018, 08:24:28 PM »
Our Kitchenaid dishwasher started leaking underneath but not from the door seal.  After some investigation I found that it was the diverter valve shaft seal that had a crack/slice in it allowing water to get by enough to drip on the floor.

Appliance dealers and parts stores USED to sell just the seal for $3.00 but have decided that now they only wanna sell the whole pump assembly to get the seal for $60.00 when the seal is really the only part that ever fails.

I know the part I need but am having trouble finding it.  It's a TC5.5x16x6.
I've tried a few local places and some online and the closest I can find is a TC5.5x16x8.
I'm not sure if that will fit and work

The model number of the dishwasher is KUDE48FXSS5 if that helps.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

There is an old school appliance place in Tacoma that my be able to help. I`ll see if I can find out their name.
There is a very fine line between a hobby and a mental illness.

Does the need justify the want ? Or does the want suffice?

Thanks Jab.  I checked their website but it's tough to see if they have the right seal,  I'll phone them tomorrow.

The only difference is the x8 will be 2mm wider than the x6. Seal part # is ID x OD x Width.

My in laws had the same dishwasher with the exact same issue. Dealer replaced the pump assembly twice under warranty. The third time it went out (after the warranty expired), they just replaced it.

They’re made by Whirlpool, so if all else fails, you may be able to find a compatible replacement from another model.

Well,  I checked by phone and email every single appliance place in Canada and several states that sells appliances or appliance parts and none of them sell just the seal.
They stopped selling just the seal nine months ago and only sell the complete sump assembly for $140CAD,  the seal itself used to sell for $3.49CAD.

I also tried every industrial supply place that specializes in seals and none have a seal with an I.D. of 5.5mm...they had 5mm and 6mm but no 5.5

So... I spent $140 and bought the assembly to remove the seal (in which I had to cut with a saw to remove the new seal as they saw fit to glue it in the replacement assembly) and fixed my dishwasher.

It works, no leaks and I am composing a nasty letter to whirlpool.  no-noING ridiculous!
Oh ya... nice to see that they're so environmentally friendly too, the assembly came packed in Styrofoam in a box about 2X2'. All for a seal about the size of a dime (16mm).

For that kind of money I'd go buy a couple of hole punches and make my own out of some rubber sheet.

Then I'd be changing it once a week.  It has an inner lip with a spring that holds it against the motor shaft.
Believe me, I thought of ways to make it myself.

Try B.O.S.S in Hamilton, Bearing & Oil Seals.
Another option is Hercules bulldog in Barrie Ont.
Both are really good hydraulic seal suppliers.

Oops I didnt realize you were looking for a seal.
I don't know how critical the thickness (5.7 is pretty close is) but try here http://www.avxseals.com/Oil-Seals-inner-diameter-5-5mm-s/1953.htm

avx was suggested to me by one of the appliance guys I called,   I talked to a guy at avx and they no have.
Trust me when I say that no one anywhere makes or sells a 5.5x16x6 seal, other who is supplying Whirlpool and they aren't selling them to anyone but Whirlpool.  Every appliance place I talked to knew of the problem and sympathized with my plight.
It had to be 5.5x16x6 due to the size of the shaft and where it fits.

Do you have the p/n for the seal?

I was going to suggest the 'bay - you can find some odd stuff there. Found some NLA parts for my Homelite blower.

Too late now.
