not a ford guy but i know a survivor when i see one. all the trucks of that vintage are used up around here. too much gravel and rust. i am sure it serves krusty just fine. it's a real truck.

Mark, just wondering how the new truck is working out after a couple of weeks.
after readjusting the carb it now cold starts and idles smooth. Getting 13.6 mpg. There are a few little things that need attention but i am very happy with it!

Doing very well on gas mileage! Anything more than 10mpg is extra in a full size carbureted truck in my opinion!

Yeah, but it only makes 135 hp.

Ya, but that is all the HP Krusty needs so all is just fine.


We're talking the motorcycle's hp right??

I used to have an early 1980's Ford Bronco with a 3-speed manual trans & 302 engine.  This rig got 10 mpg no matter how I drove it or what I did to it.  I rebuilt the carb & distributor and tried every tune up trick in the book.  I even put taller tires on it.  Still 10mpg. 

In the end I concluded the smog gear of that era must have been the problem... but who knows?

I eventually sold the Bronco and bought a Datsun early 1970's import-size pick up that pumped out 25-30mpg without fail.  I've been an import truck fan ever since.

At any rate, I'm glad you found a good old truck that meets your needs and puts a smile on your face.  And, as they say, KEEP ON TRUCKIN' :mr:

Had an 81 FSB same set up. I must have had a lighter foot. 11 MPG! LOL Best ever was 14 MPG, funny thing I was hauling butt driving to a buddies thinking my gas mileage is going to be really bad. Odd? Maybe it wants to be run hard.

I'd consider another because I like the looks.

Are you serious?  Did the Ford engineers deliberately retard it 3*?  If so, what did it accomplish besides poor mileage?

Are you serious?  Did the Ford engineers deliberately retard it 3*?  If so, what did it accomplish besides poor mileage?
reduced cyl temp. It reduces NOx emissions. More dependable than EGR. Remember this was near the end of carbureted engines and stricter emissions standards than carbs were capable of. Manufacturers were reaching for straws...

To be clear, it's not that the cam was retarded 3*. There is only so much to be gained by increasing overlap before you loose to much performance so they changed lobe centerline. We found in the field that increasing cam advance (old drag racing trick) would overcome it at less cost than replacing the cam. Besides at the time there wasn't near the selection of cams there is today.

no it takes an aftermarket degreeable cam gear. It's been years but if my memory is right they were moroso.
