I just bought 3 new filters when I was in Wally world.  Motorcraft made in the USA and about 8 bucks each.  I still have a new OEM one for the Mazda.
I've gotta change the oil in my mothers Saturn tomorrow and see why her belt is squealing.  Hopefully just a worn belt or tensioner.
I'm just a guy in a garage with some tools...

I'm far from expert here, but while your logic on media content might be correct, I would think that more media also results in a higher pressure drop between inlet and outlet which could lead to failure if below designed specs.

Less media is either gonna be thinner or have less surface area all else being equal. Thinner will give worse filtration. Less surface area will result in a higher pressure drop. So generally more media is better.
