Firefox V.11 for linux.
No ads or vids and a very small memory footprint.     Makes an old frankencompu run like a racehorse.

If you want the ads, vids and farcebook/twitter links built in just go to the next version.   Takes about 5X the memory too.

I ask the wife. Then she gives me the answer.
(unless it's porn I'm looking for but I never do that)

Call me confused, but to the best of my knowledge, Firefox does not have a search engine, but they have a deal typically with one.

Google user here, but there are google scrapers and have been for years.  One that used to be around that I used on occasional, was Scroogle.
Years ago, Altavista was the one I used, then a few other things like Yahoo came into being and I tried a few, but Google was the first that worked well for me.
Well, I guess a rule disallows, my use of a Dennis Leary song as my signature, LOL.

It left me confused a bit too.   So I looked again.    The search engine name displayed is google, but without a lot of the fluff others mention.       shrugx
It works great for my limited uses.

My nephew set this up for me knowing I know nothing of linux or software in general.    He did good, it made my old compu fast and capable again.

The GG site brings up Google but I don't use that much.   That one seems to have the ads too.

I think I'll stick to wrenching and amateur carpentry and leave the compu issues to my nephew to resolve for me....      hidex

Let me help a bit, to put it in perspective.  Linux, is the motor/transmission of your car (operating system), Firefox is the windshield, and Google (Yahoo, etc) is a GPS (Garmin, Tom Tom, Magellian). thumbsup2

I think Strik is referring to the "embedded" search engine in Firefox shown in my screenshot below. It actually has a lot of choices, but there is no protection from "cookies" or Google's prying eyes . . . and that is what is really irking the OP I think.

Some of the more sophisticated anti-virus suites have a "secure" search engine like Norton, but I sure wouldn't pay the money just for something like that.

Let me explain. The ads shown to you are supposed to "help you" and the ad's seller because it is based upon your history of web surfing. There isn't any human that really looks at any of the information. It is all automated. Most of those ads are ALSO based upon the "cookies" collected by any browser when you visit a website. So when you visit Harbor Freight (BUSTED) you will begin to see Harbor Freight ads show up everywhere you go. Even in Rusty's ads here at GG will often change ads based on what is being discussed in a thread. But no one is actually watching. No one could actually spend their time watching the huge database available that they accumulate.

Google's data is presumably based upon people who are also members of a Google sponsored activity such as Gmail mail member, YouTube member, or as in my case, a Google webmaster member. And again, "they say" it is to try and be helpful, but I also have my suspicions.

But you CAN CLEAR cookies and histories on your browser but that's a lot of work. It is only temporary, And you also risk clearing things like login info as well, but I don't allow that anyway for other security reasons.

It is a "Quixote windmill", or a phantom to try and keep everything private, but Rusty's link above looks promising. I haven't tried that one yet. So in response to your question, any search engine is fine, any browser is fine but I prefer Firefox because it shows me a website the way it was intended to be seen. But also try and understand that complete privacy is non-existent in reality. If you become a target of an investigation, make sure you haven't been in any nasty places.  lolx

https://duckduckgo.com  Stupid name but  a nice engine also big on privacy. It searches Google and Bing at the same time.

Watch the video for an overview: https://duckduckgo.com/about

If you are really paranoid about privacy get a vps in Russia or Romania and VNC or SSH tunnel a socks 4 to it and xwindow a remote desktop. lolx

I use Google. I use to Yahoo but its too easy to get side tracked there.
Those Bing ads crack me up. Bing pisses me off everytime I get directed there. I hate Bing.
