The 246gts patented "bench grinder swing me up to use gizmo"
« on: March 19, 2015, 01:51:39 PM »
On another thread Mr Fatfillup asked for more details of my invention which he named "the bench grinder swing me up to use gizmo".

Well here are the details.

A few years ago, (more than 16 it seems from the photo records) I was looking to find a way of keeping the top of my bench clear, As I used to spend hours in my workshop just sitting and looking at an old grey car I had at the time I eventually came up with an idea. It may have been invented before but I can honestly say I never saw another and this is my idea.

First I welded two channel sections to the underside of the bench. These were spaced so as to fit a flat steel plate that I made to carry the grinder plus two square hollow sections which would act as sliders.

From the sliders I hung two pieces of flat bar which were welded to the square mounting plate fixed to the grinder.

When out of use the grinder is suspended from these and the sliders pushed in such that the grinder disappears below the bench.
When you need to use the grinder you pull out the grinder and rotate the whole unit so that the flat mounting plate turns over and the grinder comes to the top.
I wanted the grinder and polisher to stick out from the front of the bench so that if I am polishing long items the bench does not get in the way so I welded a piece of square tube to the front of the bench

To square things up and give a bit of rigidity to the system I drilled a hole in the square tube and welded a stud onto the flat plate so that when in position the stud locates in the hole.

The grinder is then fixed above bench level, sticking out from the front of the bench and is ready to be used

Thanks Dave, great idea.

I have been forced into getting more stuff into a fixed amount of space and love ideas like that.

Very innovative!   thumbsup2
This car is a pile of crap. Noisy, rattly, slow and underpowered and has a reputation for being unreliable. I want one.

Can you design me one for this?
There is a very fine line between a hobby and a mental illness.

Does the need justify the want ? Or does the want suffice?

Lol.  I was thinking the same thing.  I'm thinking we'd need a motor to "sling " the motor..........I know mine is well over 200#!
